Safe Cycling

Discovering the National Park by bike is an exciting and delightful way to take in the diverse scenery of the North York Moors. Here’s a brief guide on how to stay safe and be considerate to others while you enjoy your ride.

STAY ON COURSE

  • Only cycle on blue-marked bridleways; avoid yellow-marked footpaths.

  • There are four types of rights of way, offering hundreds of kilometers of bridleways and byways for cycling.

  • If you download a route, verify that it is legal or that you have the necessary permissions.

  • Be aware that similar colours may be used for graded cycle routes at trail centres, which are distinct from public rights of way.

respect others

  • Yield to walkers and horse riders.

  • Alert others to your presence with a bell or a call.

  • Leave gates as you find them; open gates may be for access or livestock.

  • Control your speed on busy trails, at junctions, around bends, and in blind spots. Be mindful of livestock and wildlife as well.

  • Prioritize safety, not speed. Rights of way are not meant for racing or challenges.

  • Be friendly, say hello. We’re all here to enjoy the outdoors together.

respect the trail

  • Keep singletrack trails narrow by staying on the designated path.

  • Help prevent erosion by remaining on the trail.

  • In bad weather, avoid excessively wet and boggy areas to allow the trails to recover. Consider using a trail center, which is designed for all-season riding.

  • Report any problems or damage on rights of way to the National Park authorities.

clean up

  • Don’t let pests or diseases hitch a ride.

  • Clean and wash your bike after every ride, either onsite if possible or at home before your next outing.

  • A hose, brush, and bike cleaner are all you need to maintain your bike and prevent the spread of contaminants.

  • Leave no trace. Be an eco-warrior, not just a weekend rider. Take your litter home with you.

stay organised

  • Plan ahead and ensure you’re well-prepared.

  • Maintain your bike and carry basic spares like a multi-tool, inner tube, and pump. Check out our cycle repair stations.

  • Inform someone of your route and expected return time.

  • Dress appropriately for potential weather changes.

  • Bring enough food and drink for the duration of your ride. Consider stopping at a cycling-friendly café.

ask, don't assume

  • Building or altering trails without landowner consent is illegal.

  • Such activities can disrupt wildlife and destroy natural habitats.

  • Always obtain permission from the landowner before undertaking any work.
